Spring 2014 Newsletter ...
Downhill slide continued... Microsoft, Oracle, and business
Disclaimer... the opinions expressed in the following are purely my own, although likely shared by many others.
In my last newsletter I spoke substantially about a growing train wreck with Microsoft software. In the next month support for Windows XP ends. No more updates. After 12 years, they have stopped patching security problems. It also seems they will also stop support for Microsoft Security Essentials on XP. A year ago, I mentioned issues with Windows Update. Read this... Infoworld This is STILL a problem. What does this say about Microsoft? Microsoft is pushing people off the "desktop" and onto phones and tablets. I ask "What about business?" I don't see any solutions at the moment. We will just have to live with Microsoft's decisions. Apple make great computers, if they will do what you want them to do. Techrepublic comparison . My daughter bought a Macbook when graduating high school in 2007. The only repairs it has needed since are a new battery and charger. It lasted through 4 years of college and 2 years of work before she decided to buy a new one. We still use her original. It is as fast as the day she bought it and faster than our newer and "more powerful" Windows laptops. Remember that longevity can be an advantage, especially when buying a new computer that needs data moved, new software installed, and possibly a steep learning curve.
One continuing reminder on anti-malware products... I recommend frequent scans with Hitman Pro. Hitman Pro has a 30 day free trial and the annual license is a good value if you have frequent malware infections. I also recommend Malwarebytes available free at http://www.malwarebytes.org Be sure you are downloading malwarebytes and not one of the paid sponsor products. NEVER use more than one virus protection product at a time. (Malwarebytes scanner is a removal tool, use it in addition to your current product. They also offer a protection product too.)
That's it for this newsletter... enjoy the rest of spring !!
Until next time... Happy Computing !
